I am so glad I found this forum. I have learned many things from the ever helpful members. Now I need to ask for help again. Over the week end I drove to PA to pick up a New Hermes GTX pantograph. I also got 4 sets of fonts in fairly good condition and the machine is quite nice compared to some I saw on EBAY. Anyway, I don't have a clue as to how to use this gadget and am looking for tutorials if they are available so if anybody can point me in that direction I would appreciate it. Also, are there any worthwhile books on the subject? I was thinking that I could make patterns and custom items in plastic on my laser and then use the pantograph to transfer them to metal. Mike, Congratulations! I've always said, "Ya gotta start somewhere." The GTX is a very versatile machine and a good place to start. This is certainly an area of my expertise. I use a pantograph quite often. I can answer any questions you may have, although, for the most part, in the way of PicTutorials, I'll be producing those for the Premium members of the subscription site. David: I have 5/8" Dbl. line gothic, 5/8" dbl. line century, 1 1/2" single line block caps, and 2 1/2" Greek ( have some fraternity business). I bid on a couple of thers on ebay but did not win the bid. If I can make my own patterns then I will probable only buy single line block in a 5/8" size. There are some others I'd like to have but I have no immediate need for any. It just seems like every month I'm turning down some kind of job where I need to engrave metal and a computerized system is not feasible right now. Mike,

Laser-generated template/patterns will work, although you'll want to make sure they're about .020 in depth, so your stylus (the piece you trace with) won't slip out of the groove.

You can also use a lubricant on the template, to keep the stylus from hanging up.

David: Very kind of you but I have plenty of brass mistakes to practice on plus a lot of plastic. Some friends closed their business a few years ago and gave me a lot of engraving plastic. Steve: Congratulations on your acquisition. My engraver actually came from your neck of the woods in Dresher, PA from Bob Laird. I have a xeroxed operating instruction book which lists a lot of models, I-L included. If you need a copy PM your address and I'll make a copy for you. Thanks for your kind offer! I haven't unpacked it yet since I have to get rid of a couple of 17" monitors and two old pc's to make room on the table for it. For now I have Harvey as my "instruction book" but if you have some spare time I would appreciate it. I have a 147 page general manual but not machine specific... more the history and basics of using a pantograph. If you want a copy, it is in PDF format, it would be my pleasure to send you the file. Mike, Thanks, I already got 2 sets from them and gave one to Harvey for the store...... :D Now I have to pick up my Zippo jigs.. :-) And get a couple of metal bits... the ones that came with the machine are all for plastics.... and I need a burnisher and drag bit... the drag bits from the GM are the short ones and the machine didn't come with an adapter... just takes the 4" long bits.
