Phil,

From the specs, Metalgraph sounds like an exciting new product.

Any encouraging words of advice for Larry?

yes, it is supposeably both laser and rotary material. I spoke with Rowmark today after they received my sample and they agreed with me. They suggested I laser a second time out of focus which we did and still the same results. They were going to send it to their quality control people as they could not get good results either. I purchased 15 half sheets to start but am going to have to return. Its a great idea but does not work as stated.
We are still looking for an exterior material in gold with black core.Any suggestions??
Larry

I am sorry but I am out of the loop on this one. I am working for the custom division of Rowmark and this is a new product that I am not up to speed on. I have to defer to my associates. My suggestion is you speak to our Customer Service Department, they will follow through and work to resolve any concerns.

Phil

I ordered samples of the multigraph and metalgraph material and received them a few days ago.
I was trying to engrave all the colors and realized that when i removed the protective covering from the multigraph yellow/black, the yellow color came off with the protective plastic. I would say that 75% of the yellow came off.
I called Rowmark to inform them about this problem.
I was told that probably the sample I got was sealed with the protective plastic before the yellow die had a chance to cure.

draw your conclusions.
Abdul

The outdoor vintage gold is not a laserable material but it can be lasered.
It may require more than one pass to get through the thick cap but that is a good thing if you want to use it outside. We sell a lot for outdoor to people who don't want to pay metal cast bronze prices.

For larger signs the 1/8 thick is better if you are using screws or lawn stakes for mounting since it is more rigid. Also the thicker can be lasered at higher power without warping due to the heat. Most places don't stock it but can special order it in 1/8

Larry,

My suggestion would be to route (rotary engrave) and color-fill the material.

Durability of the outdoor gold, with a jet black image.

I've seen traditional Metallex, Metalply etc. (indoor) material, routed and color-filled.

My well-trained eye was fooled into thinking the material was actual brass. The sign was in the Gene Autry museum in L.A.

Of course, being an engraver, I was probably paying more attention to the signage, than the exhibits. :-)

Thank you Phil.

Looks like Larry has been in touch with Rowmark.

Any custom materials coming down the pike, that you can talk about, without divulging company secrets. :-)

We'll be receiving a qtr sheet of "Copper Penny/Black" Metalgraph tomorrow (Wednesday). We'll report back as to how it lasers. Based on comments so far, I too may return it or get a credit.

Hey! As a result of my thread, I've had a visit from my Vision rep, Joel Brill. I'm a new man...until next month.

By the way, he's turned me on to Panterials. I'll be in touch with them soon. I'm aware that you do business with them.

Thanks.

Ed,

I'm glad to hear you're getting some help with your rotary/drag machine.

Opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Yeah, I'm a Panterials customer. Mark Berlant and his sister Karen, are the owners.

Their (dearly departed) father was involved with New Hermes, as was Mark, until Mark founded Panterials.

Very nice folks. They'll treat you right. :-)

I just received my first test sheet today.

I lasered some test swatches with my ULS 30w with different settings. I also rotary engraved a piece.

Like most gold foils I've tried in the past it depends on how the light reflects whether the lettering is black or kinda milky black. When I hold the piece so the room light is highly reflected the lettering is jet black, otherwise, not very flattering. Didn't matter if it was laser or rotary engraved, the results are the same for me.

Maybe more testing is in order....

BTW, I used the Brushed Antique Gold/Black

Hi ,
I purchased the vintage gold per your recomendation.
We are on our third pass with the laser and still not clean. What do you recomend we run it at and how many passes.
We have a 40 watt unit.

To our mates at Rowmark,

You know blokes....You make a great range of products.....
I'd be hard pressed to use other brands ahead of Rowmark....

But...What on Earth is going on ?

Who's butt needs to be kicked here ?

I only have done a couple with our new 40 watt so
don't have tweaked settings yet.

I started at 30 speed and adjusted it a little on the fly.
I think it took 4-5 passes but was busy doing other things
so just kept repeating to just get it done. it was the 1/16
thick so I didn't want to overdo it and warp it.
