Well, my 3 year old 21" CRT is on the way out I think.

My monitor started blinking off and on several times a day starting about a month ago. Today I have begun to see a ghost shadow 1/8 inch to the right of all objects displayed on screen. On white it shows as magenta. Should I be dialing LaCie today???

I can't seem to affect the ghost with any of my monitor controls. Any ideas good buddies??

If you can replace the monitor as a test do it. It may be the video card or driver. If it works fine with the other monitor, then it is the monitor.

If you get the same results, then think video card or driver,

When you finally understand it completely... it changes.

thanks guys. If it were something as simple as the cable I'd be elated. I'll try that tomorrow.

Mike,

A while back, I had a monitor that I thought was going out.

Turned out to be a weak cable connection.

Seems even more probable, since it seems to coincide with the recent earthquake in Hawaii.

Hoping you made it through OK.

A couple of years ago I bought a pair of used 21" monitors that came with a pair of cheap VGA cable. When I hooked them up they had ghosting. I replaced the cables with ones I had on other monitors and the problems went away. So cables can certainly give that exact symptom. But so can other things.

Thanks guys. Good advice. I'll try the cable connections etc.

Edit: I'll be goddamn, go to Hell! It was a loose connection!!! I tightened both monitor cables even though they really didn't seem loose and pressed the video card slightly into its slot, adjusted the power feed to the video card (the one I have does have a separate power source) and PRESTO! NO MORE ghosting.

Muchas Gracias Mi Amigos!

Dave, This earthquake was more an inconvenience than anything else. Some property damage on the Big Island but no death. Here all we got was the usual house shaking and our power was off for 16 hours.

Glad it was an easy fix for you.

I wanted to take this time to remind everyone to check your cables and power cords. With winter coming along and heaters turning on, I have seen more then my share of sparks, melted cables and trashed equipment due to close proximity to various types of heaters along the walls and floors.

Mike,

I think we all love a happy ending and I'm especially glad to hear that the people of the islands didn't fare too badly.

It wasn't that big a deal here. Could have been though if the quake started a Tsunami but this one didn't.

Actually with the power off till midnight, Karen and I set candles about, listened to a battery powered radio, grilled fish that would have gone bad anyway and then watched our neighbors shoot off fireworks.....later on, well, ah hem, you know. It turned out to be sort of romantic. This is Hawaii after all. ;-)

Mike,

Sounds pretty rough.

Good to see you lived through it. :-)
