Just a reminder to those of you who enjoy live chat rooms.

Our backup forum has always had a live chat room:

Do you have plans on being in that chat room yourself, David. Do you know of others who will be there?

David,

It's just being offered up to those who are fans of chat rooms.

Personally, I'm not in that group.

The chat room feature of forums or technology specified internal chatrooms only work if the forum that promotes their features use the room in working with their forum members. Even if that means that they can only drop by every now and then to check in. As you probably know, in order to make the chatroom feature work, it has to be supported. Just having a place to go to means absolutely "nothing."

David,

Chatrooms are great for social interaction..... The downside is that a lot of technical help and information tends to be shared where the main membership never sees or hears about it....

Then a question is asked in the forum and the answer is "oh, we discussed that in the chat room."

"Don't believe everything you think!"

David,

You are correct. Any forum or forum feature without content and support is worthless and will eventually wither away like so many have in the past.

Agreed on all the issues. I think in many cases, in other forums that have chat rooms that the same issues that get talked about in the chats are always followed up in the forums as new threads. The person posting can inform others about how they were helped in the chat on a problem that was happening at that specific time with a fellow engraver or decorator. In the end, if you have time to be in the chats and socialize with other decorators and engravers it makes you better at what you are able to offer your customers, if you have people in the chats who might be able to talk you through a problem or assist you. To me it's about relationship building with other decorators, and also idea sharing, and business development.

David,
I have always been a proponent of a chat room.
What I would like to do is set up an "Engraving Etc." room on mIRC. It might take time to populate but I think in the end would be beneficial for the reasons you mentioned. Especially the relationship building part.
I know Rodney Gold frequents irc from time to time and I think that once it became known that an EE room on IRC existed, that it would soon become popular if not useful. The best part is that it would be free except for the registration fee for using mIRC.

Just my two cents. Want change?

On the WOE chatroom, I've chatted with Rodney a few times. If you can get him to look at the chat, when he's not playing poker, he's great to chat with. Looking forward to being able to hopefully actually meeting him when he makes he trip to California soon.

As you know, you can run the mIRC, along with the other chat rooms being open, or on Skype at the same time.

It just depends on where people want to go, and what chat rooms they want to have open.

With the advent of Skype and it still being free I think the drawbacks of a chat are overcoming the advantages. It is really a great venue especially with four person conferencing with perfect quality.

Harvey,
While IRC does not have voice capabilities, ( yahoo does however.) the majority of the major players on the forum could chat as opposed to being limited to 4 in a conference.
Regardless if it is a forum related chat as it is on WOE, or individuals using SKYPE or a dedicated chat room on IRC, I think the virtually instantaneous communication is good. It also builds a broader sense of community, and friendship.
One thing that *I* do not believe can be disputed is that the "sense of family" that exists on EE CANNOT be found anywhere else, and THAT more than anything is what keeps *me* here.

David,
What I find fascinating at this moment ( other than my belly button lint ), is that you and I have exchanged no less than 4 posts. We may as well be on chat.
You are correct however in saying that some things could not be archived, but I believe that few people actually use the archives as they should anyway.
Either way it is FUN!

Chuck...we used to have a chat room available through a distributor for dye sub. We had a set day and time for it and it was quite well received for the year or so that it was up. There was always a target subjet, but, other stuff did get discussed.

Now, I belong to CuttingEdge Sandcarvers forum, and we have a chat set up for Friday evenings. I was on it for the first time last Friday and it too, was informative although it did get "way off" a few times.

And of course, you know well of the DSSI chat room that is up 24-7, attended mostly by the core 6-7 folks, more active some days than others.

I support the concept of chat rooms but believe for any real value, there has to be set times and days for real information. We are or should be too busy to sit by and keep an eye on the chat window all day.

Doug, I agree with you there. I would think "set times" would be great, but it could also be kept open all the time as is the case on IRC so folks "could" drop in. Most programs have a notification of some sort when someone does pop in, so those that wanted to could leave the program up and so on. But I agree whole heartedly that for any specific subject or topic, a set time is the only way to go.
