This week I had a customer call and ask if I could make a plaque 26" x 6" of wood as a gift for her mother.

With a little more discussion I advised her that I didn't have the size in cherry but would she consider leather with a frame. She would.

Since we don't see much leather I thought I'd post this. It's some rawhide I bought many years ago and framed with mahogany that I also had on hand. The rawhide was waxed with Johnson's before lasering.

Mike,

Beautiful work. The picture makes the mahagony look like palm wood that we have in the islands...

Merry Christmas

Very nice Mike!

Especially since it's a concept that hasn't been beat to death. :-)

I think this item is beautiful. Inspired me to do one today. Turned out very nice. May I ask what you charge for this item?
Thanks,
SamC

Sam:

Happy New Year from another septogenarian.

I charged $115.00 and could have gotten more. I had the leather already glued so all I had to do was cut it to the size and wax it before lasering.

The mahogany frame was made from free scraps that I picked up in Ohio several years ago. The frame was more difficult than the leather. I also put pads on the back and wire for hanging.

Had I had to go out and buy materials I think the price would have been prohibitive. But I am a woodworker by hobby and a pack rat.

Glad you like it.

I too am a woodworker. But think I will visit Hobby Lobby as their frames are 1/2 off this week. I have lasered leather before and I like it very much. In this little Southern Oklahoma town I could not find Johnson's paste wax so used a past automotive wax. Used three coats. Even if I do say so it looks very good. I often times am at a loss what to charge for my efforts.
Thanks for the information.
Happy New Year.
Sam

Sam:

Glad that worked out for you.

The one thing abut Johnson's wax is that mineral spirits is a solvent for it so you can clean up corners etc. or soften it to make it go on easier. There are better brands at the WW stores but they're twice as expensive.

As far as the charges go, I think you could find a $100 variance if you polled the members.

I have a paste wood workers wax but it is old and dried. Tried it on sample of leather, but was not satisfied with it. Will be in larger town this week and get some Johnson's. FYI I have worked wood for 25 years. Rarely throw any small pieces of walnut, oak, ash, pine, maple away. Frequently will glue up narrow pieces for future use, possibly with some clocks.
Thanks again,
Sam

I now can understand the charges for this piece. This week visited Hobby Lobby for a frame. My piece is 4 3/4" tall X 20" long. Frames are on half price. Picked out a pretty frame. Full price was $57.00. Shocked me, but this week is half price sale. Makes me want to enter the framing business.

Sam,

What is half of a retail price that has been doubled? It is normal retail and still gets you in the store. :-)
