Since "The Beach" closed its doors and the other locations we were looking into proved too expensive, or too far away from the LV Convention Center, I think this may be the cure to our venue dilemma:

Dinner - Specialties include prime rib, carved turkey, steaks and chops, pasta dishes cooked to order, a variety of Chinese wok entrees, fresh seafood, peeled shrimp, sushi. Deluxe cakes, pastries and much, much more. Complimentary beer, wine and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages .

Dinner $16.99 plus tax - includes complimentary Draft Beer and Wine.

Sound good? I think so.

Guess where?

http://www.lvhilton.com/dining/buffet.shtml

Although there are no reservations accepted for the Hilton buffet, there's seating for 100's.

The buffet is open until 10:00 pm.

Considering our party will be on a Thurday evening, I doubt we'll have a problem with overcrowding.

What do you think?

David,
It sounds good to me.
While they understandable do not take reservations, I wonder if an inquiry would answer the question as to whether or not we could have a section of the room cordoned off? You know how rowdy we can get. :D (devil) B-)

Chuck,

That would be tantamount to reserving seats, which I doubt they'd allow.

I think we'd have a better chance of appealing to the host/hostess, in-person, slightly before our kick-off time of 6 pm. I think they'd appreciate what we're trying to accomplish and most likely make an allowance.

They may make some provisions if they are informed that we believe 100? people will be attending starting at 6:00 PM. I might also expect some special service for that many guests.

Be sure to bring a sign to inform members what section is for us, magic marker will suffice. Request a tripod to place it on just past the cashier station, I am sure they will oblige. 100? people gives us a little leverage. They should even have a special department to handle special events like this. We cannot be the only ones.

EDIT: Good idea.

Harvey,

My original inquiry, was made to the Hilton restaurant reservations number.

I was told their duty was to book reservations for the "restaurants" of which the Buffet wasn't included.

There may be someone in the Bufffet itself who could respond to our special requests.

David,

I think it would be worth looking into.

As I was reading Harvey's post, it occured to me that if we do not have a section cordoned off, we will mix and mingle with "Joe Customer" and Joe Customer may not appreciate it.

Did you ever find out about taking over Quarks?

Sorry guys but I vote no. How will we be able to use a mike and introduce one another? How will the "circle of excellence" form? To me it seems we won't be able to form the sharing intimate atmosphere I have come to look forward to. Will Chuck be able to wear his skirt? How will the door prizes be handled? Sorry to be negative but that is MHO.

I have 2 cousins who work out there. I will give them a call and see if they have any suggestions. David- have you checked with the city convention bureau?

Chuck,

One of our forum members gathered information about reserving the Captain's Lounge, which is a private room at the Star Trek Experience.

Rental of the room itself, (I believe) was $350 per hour, with food/drinks being a separate charge.

Knowing how we like to "hang out" after dinner, I didn't think our group would bear the cost of having the party there.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm certainly open to suggestion.

Dee,

Haven't checked with the convention bureau.

I received information from a 5-star, Northern Italian cuisne restaurant, located next to The Beach.

Sounded excellent.

After tax and gratuity, our cost would have been in the $46 per person range.

I'm sure what our "traffic will bear" varies from person to person.

I'm trying for something palatable (food and cost-wise) for all.

I'm with you Dee. I would rather pay a little bit more and have a private room for our group. It was nice last year to be able to go around with the mic and introduce ourselves and hear other's introductions. I think that is a necessity. If the buffet would guarantee us a separate section we could bring in a portable PA system to use.

My experience with buffets in LV at dinner time is that it's hard to find more than a couple of tables next to each other. My guess is that it would not work out that well.

You might want to try calling the Marriot Suites, which is next door to where the Beach was. They have meeting rooms and hospitality suites, with catering. No idea of the costs though.

A private area is a must in my opinion, plus the buffet would not appreciate us just hanging out talking.

Dave,

I'm with the people who prefer a private room with a P.A. system.

I think it would be a good idea to determine a group price-threshold. Most everyone was fine with the $30 per person figure.

Of course, tax (7.75%) and gratuity (18%) add significantly to the per-person costs.

No surprise there.

Some of the local hotels (Embassy Suites, for instance) require that a minimum number of their hotel rooms be booked, in order to reserve a private banquet room, for a given night.

Here's the question for the group? How much ($) is too much?

I would be willing to go as high as $50.00 per inclusive of tax and gratuity.

Dee Darling,

Venue has no bearing on the wearing of the skirt. I have been known to cut up in the most formal of situations. It breaks the ice. B-)

Chuck,

I don't think we realize what a sweet deal we had at The Beach.

Maybe that's what they had to fold! :-)

I checked with The Marriott and Thursday the 22nd is booked. They have an opening on Friday the 23rd.

The person I spoke to, said their dinners average between $35-$40 per person + tax + gratuity, which brings it close to the $50 per-person, all-inclusive (minus booze) total you mentioned.

David,
I called my cousin a Vegas resident for 20+years. He said he would make some calls over the next couple of days. The criteria I gave him was 100+ people, on the monorail route, private room with hopefully a PA, a buffet preferred but ordering off the menu would work also. I told him $18-35.00.

I will call the visitors' center tomorrow if that is OK with you.

David,
I"m wondering since it is now only 48 days away if it would not be prudent to book it. Find out what the cancellation policy is if they have one, but I am sure you know that time is running out.

Just my two cents. Want change?

Chuck,

Some places I've called will hold a room for a week, but that's about it. Then they're looking for a 50% deposit, to lock it in.

As you say, time is runing short and we'll have to reach a conclusion very quickly.
