As I read it you are trying to engrave just the overlaps but cut out the rest of the outlines.
Been there and done that but it is not easy.
You need to convert the text to curves.
Then select all the overlapping letters and combine, (not group) them into one item.
Go into node edit, place a new node on each overlapping point, then break that node. When both ends of the line to be engraved are broken select 'extract'. Version X3 both will show in the objects docker as both selected, select only the outline, then back into the node edit mode. (Pressing the space bar will return to the previous tool.) Drag one node that is on top of the other a bit away then back and you will see the cursor have a bent arrow, that is the connect cursor. Just drop it there and it will connect. Do for both ends on each extracted internal line, but do it to the outline.
OK, as easy to see through as mud on a moonless midnight with dead batteries in your flashlight in the middle of a power failure. (P.S. Your car battery is dead also.)
