Ok, here's the deal. Running Windows XP with SP2 and CorelDraw 12.

Typically, when I click on a CorelDraw file, it opens - and it does... BUT what it all of a sudden it started doing is this:

When I click on another file, _another_ instance of CorelDraw opens. (then I have 2 instances of CorelDraw open)

It used to just open the new file inside the existing/running instance CorelDraw.

I am assuming that this might be a 'file type' issue withing Xp and not a CorelDraw problem (i.e. in XP looking at "tools", "folder options" and then "File Types")
Checking 'Extensions' settings, and even resetting it but to no avail.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks...
-Mike

This is not necessarily the answer but you might try REbooting and holding down the F8 key. That returns Corel to its default settings.

You will lose all your workspace settings when you do this so you might want to save them first.

Mike,

I think you meant "re-start" the CorelDRAW program and hold down the F8 key, not "re-boot". I always associate re-boot with the computer itself.

Right you are! Still not sure it's a solution but worth a try.

Not sure about version 12, but in X3 you can set file associations within CorelDraw in the Tools > Optiona > Globals > Filters.

If the other suggestions made above don't help, try turning off the association for .cdr then reboot the computer, then run CD and enable that association again. That way it will replace the settings within that system file association.

Sometimes other methods of resetting the association don't work, but removing an association, rebooting, and adding it again should truely refresh it. (you would have to reboot because it is an OS association, even though you can set it in CD)

Mike, the F8 on CD restart got me out of a jam last time I FUBAR'd my workspace, all ok with that now. Hence my "Problem Revisited" B-)
Unfortunately the F8 did nothing for my multiple instances.

Dave, your suggestion worked - now back to "normal" except for one minor detail: Now all of my .CDR files have lost their icon images. No biggie, it's happened before but I don't remember how I got them back.
(I think I used some 3rd party icon fixer/restorer thinga-ma-bob)

Thanks again...

A lot of times you can open windows explorer, then go to Tools, Folder Options. Then the tab File Types, scroll to where you see CDR. Click on the Advanced button, then see if you can check the "Browse in Same Window" option. Otherwise you have to use DDE under the Open command. Which I can't help you with, it's a little too technical for me.

Sometimes you don't see the Advanced tab, you see a Restore... not sure what to do then. Other than changing the registry manually (blech).

In the same place that Shaddy mentioned, after hitting the Advanced tab, is a place to set the icon. You should be able to simply browse from there to CorelDraw and select the icon.

Mike - I have the same setup (XP, SP2, Corel 12) and had the same dang double-load problem. But my problem is it appeared and disappeared without any intervention from me.

One day it began occuring - I rebooted several times to no avail - and then as quickly as it started, it mysteriously stopped.

I can offer no insight to you other than to say 'I feel your pain'! Back in my tech support days (a looooong time ago), if a user suggested their problem might be due to the rain or El Nino, we said 'ok' and left it at that. Perhaps it's come back to haunt me!!

If you do find a solution, let me know so I can take whatever steps to make sure my double-load problem doesn't resurface...when it rains! ;)

Shaddy, Dave - yup, been there, done that.

I can do the icon replacement on just about anything on my system - except for CorelDraw. Hmmm, go figure.

As mentioned, the only way I was able to resolve that issue last time was to use a 3rd party icon fixxer upper/restorer program. As to which i can not find or remember the name.

oh well, like I say, all is working the way it is supposed to now, I can live without the graphic in the icon.

Thanks!

Holly, I think the problem is now Global Warming. B-)

Actually I did resolve the double incidence issue.
See Dave's post for solution:

If that doesn't work for you, send an e-mail to Al Gore, afterall he invented both the internet and global warming! (devil)
