Check out http://www.thunderroadlaser.com/ghostingprocess.htm How do they get the 2nd colour on the chrome? Could they be using Cermark for glass?? Has anyone heard of this "ghosting" process? :S

"Our new ghosting process allows the image to disappear & reappear at certain angles of light, much like ghost flames. This process is just as unique & permanent as our tattoo process. The ghosted image is lasered at such a high setting that the image is fused to the sub-surface layer of the chrome. You can have your custom image ghosted, tattooed, or with a combination of both. Our ghosting process is only offered for Harley-Davidson® parts at this time."

It also says that it's smooth to the touch. I wonder if this is a combination laser etching that is YAG for the subtle color, and CO2 for the rich black......or vice versa......

Because of the reference to Harley Davidson parts only....I have a feeling that it applies to the quality and laserability of the chrome. I understand that some cheap overseas chrome does not cermark or thermark well at all.....so I guess it could be one of those marking materials as well.

Thanks,

Brian Genrich

Vicky,

I think Brian is onto it. It has to be a combination of the ghosting being done first with a YAG or Fiber Laser, then the dark image marked with Cermark and a CO2 laser. The YAG or Fiber laser may be one of those offered by Trotec, Epilog or Universal.
