I have a surplus cutter grinder I am going to be putting on eBay, but wanted to give the folks here a first chance.

This cutter grinder pictured below is a New Hermes CG-4. It is a very clean unit and is functioning very well mechanically. I will also ship the manual with it, which has all of the details necessary to begin sharpening your own cutters in-house.

It comes with an 11/64 collet.

I'd like to sell this machine for $500 USD plus shipping. If I don't have any takers here and you change your mind, I'll have it listed on eBay.

Dave, grinder appears to be in mint condition. Wish you were around Buffalo area I would drive down to pick it up.
Shipping and importing over the border poses problems.
I've been looking for one for some time but it is hard to find one locally.

I could ship it to an engraving shop in Buffalo, then have you pick it up there. If there's a will there's a way. :-) I'm sure I know someone who knows someone in Buffalo.

Dave, if we can arrange that option please keep me informed.
I don't know anybody in Buffalo personally however a member of the forum may be found.

Tony,

I will contact Barbara Sefried with Niagara Sports Awards in Kenmore, NY, which is a northern suburb of Buffalo.

What part of Ontario do you live in? Would you be driving down to Buffalo, NY via Grand Island, or further south on Qew Highway?

David,

Holy Moly!!

I paid more for my CG-4 (no rhyme intended) and it was nowhere near as clean as the one you're showing.

I'm not known for keeping my equipment in pristine condition, but I can say that my cutter grinder is one of the most important pieces of equipment in my shop and despite my lack of machine maintenance, still works like a charm.

Imagine if I made a concerted effort to take care of it! :-)

This is a good deal folks. Get it before it goes to ebay!

Dave,

I am just outside of Toronto. I cross to U.S. either at Lewiston or Rainbow Bridge.
Never did go down QEW to Peace Bridge but it is very close Kenmore.
Just last summer I was twice on the way to Boston. In June I entered at Lewiston and in August at Rainbow bridge.
Let me know if Barbara agrees with all that.

Tony,

Barbara and Doug were both out of the shop this morning. I spoke with an employee who seemed to have some authority to say so, that it would be fine to ship the machine up to them and they would hold it until you picked it up.

I am expecting a return call from one of the owners, just to make sure everything is fine with them.

If everything looks good to you, I'll figure out the shipping cost and you can send payment.

Dave,

Can you tell me about grinding wheel. Is it diamond cup for carbide cutters and what grit it is.
Please find out shipping cost and let me know.

Tony,

I have been using the wheel that has been on this machine since I purchased it. I am pretty confident it is a resin bound diamond wheel. The information on the wheel is:

New Hermes
30-273-00

In the New Hermes Engraving Machine Accessories catalog I have, the resin bound diamond wheel is 30-273-01. This is the closest match in this catalog.

I called New Hermes, one of the largest engraving machine suppliers in the United States, to get further information for you. According to the customer service rep, there is only one person who "might" know what this grinding wheel is, in spite of the fact that I provided him their product code. This person was out of the office and would have to call me back.

I am holding out hope that the new owner of Gravograph - New Hermes sees value in a complete overhaul of the customer service structure of this company. Great products - Sad, Sad service.

Sorry for the rant.

Tony,

It's a diamond wheel on the grinder. Not sure what grit, but I'd say at least 400.

That's the one you'll need.

Tony,

New Hermes just called back and said that the wheel is a diamond wheel. They only offer one diamond wheel and the grit number was not available. They couldn't explain the difference in the last digit of the product number.

New Hermes has two wheels that are designed for sharpening carbide cutters. One of them is made of silicon carbide (30-272-00), which is for rough grinding. The other wheel is the diamond (30-273-00), which you would be recieving with this machine.

There is also a carborundum wheel (30-271-00) available that is used for sharpening high speed steel cutters.

Are we a go on this deal?

Thank you David,

You are correct in stating that 400 grit is what I need.
I also have Hermes catalog but the number Dave Takes posted thoes not crossreferance to the one in catalog. 30-273-01 is shown in catalog.

Thank's again for all your help.

Hi Dave,

It appears that the wheel is diamond. I called local Hermes distributor and the number they have listed for diamod wheel is 30-273-01M.
The 273 part of the code should indicate as "diamond".
Anyway, have you checked into shipping charges?.
Please let me know.
Thank's

Tony
