Bought a new PC with Windows Vista pre-installed a few weeks ago. The Epilog driver did not seem to install correctly , so I emailed Tech Support.

Within an hour or so, I had an email back : the driver ***IS*** Vista compatible, but a file was missing from the download set available on the Epilog site. Attached to the email was a zip file of the driver files which installed fine.

Bravo to Epilog Tech Support! - superquick fix!

Mike,

Epilog won't be alone. Vista came out of the gate prematurely.

A friend of mine bought a new Gravograph laser and tried to run it on Vista.

There was a driver incompatability issue, which Gravopgraph is working out.

Exactly why we opted to go with XP on both PC's that we just bought. They do come with free Vista upgrades, but until all of the necessary drivers are available for us, we're going to stick with XP.

Excellent plan...We had the same problem with mac when it went to os x

None of the drivers for older equpiment would work with the new os.....It was a huge mess...Sucks to be on the cutting edge of software sometimes ;)

Thanks,

Brian Genrich

I am running a 500 MHz, 32 Meg, 3 Gig hard drive unit on one of my engravers with Win98. It is at least as fast as my modern unit running 1.2 GHz with Win XP.

I have never seen such memory hogs as the more recent versions of Wndows.

So run right out and get the newer deproved versions.

Too bad they do not make drivers for Linux.

I have completely given up with MS and I am currently switching to MAC with a dual boot option.

I have been a PC person for ever but this Vista mess makes me sick so I decided to Convert. Even running the Mac in the XP environment the computer screams 5 times faster than anything I currently have and my systems are less than one year old.

What I like about this set-up is being able to have Illustrator open in the mac environment and in the PC environment and copy and paste the files between them without any issues.

We are testing the compatibility issues when printing to our lasers but so far there have been no problems.

Mike,

The Linux proponents on John Fish's site, "Newbies Linux" are rubbing their hands together.

They think Microsoft has "jumped the shark" this time, with the introduction of Vista, considering its resource-hungry nature and not-ready-for-primetime status.

Has anybody heard of how far back in models Epilog will release Vista drivers for?

I have a feeling there will be some more orphans created.

We are still using a Radius as a second laser with XP. Just wondering if we need to ever replace the computer if it will work with Vista down the road.

Supposedly Vista will have the "run as" feature where you can designate a program to run as xp pro and older O/S's...

Don't know if or how well it will work, though.

Gee, didn't Windows 2000 have that 'feature' to pacify all the gamers that couldn't run their games on the newer OSs? If memory serves me correctly, my kids were sorely disappointed over the limitations of the Win2K implementation.

I have a program that uses a serial port and works great in Win95/98 but freezes when trying to access the serial port in 2K or XP, no matter how you set the "compatability mode". So I'm not sure I would trust Microsoft's concept of compatability with Vista.

The SummaSketch tablet uses a serial port and even with their software to add to XP it will not work.

Windows ME changed the directory/file name DOS system by adding a '\' after what it returns, blowing all of the older DOS programs out of the water with that change. Setting it for 98 or 95 compatibility does nothing.

Then XP came along and when a DOS call asks for the drive in use it gives the drive and directory. Then when asked for only the directory it gives drive and directory again. Nothing using those calls can work. Again setting for 98 or 95 compatibility does nothing.

My personal opinion is that it is an intended problem to force the program suppliers to buy the latest version of the languages which cost a fortune for the full package.
