What is the general consensus about leaving or removing labels from other engravers on jobs that you do? I generally leave them on and add my own but sometimes when I work really hard matching text I am tempted to take the old labels off and put mine on only. My thinking is that if I do a lot of work getting it to look right and have the capabilty of saving the job, I should be able to reap the reward on future jobs. For engravers that I know that are no longer in business, I generally take these labels off. It's also debatable how many customers actually know to look at the labels but I have so far assumed that it is worth putting ny label on things that I produce.

Colin,

I don't know if there's a right or wrong answer.

I do know that if I'm updating another company's particularly hideous perpetual award, I don't want my label anywhere near it.

In fact, I've seen some work so bad that even the person who made it won't attach their own label to it. :-)

David - that's my view! We have one company in town that didn't used to use labels and I am always repairing or re-engraving their work to fix errors. I would not want my label on their work - it is not a reflection of my quality. They are using labels now and the fixes still come to us.

If the label is from somewhere out of my area, and they are bringing it in to have the engraving done (say a national company made the award and the client bought the item on-line or through their club), I will put my label on it so the next person who gets the engraving done knows where to go locally. I don't take the other label off, but put my label in a little more visible position on the back.

We do very little of other people's fixes--by intent. However, if someone brings in a perpetual plaque that has been everywhere over time, we do the current plate but do not put our label on the plaque.

Beyond this, we label it if most of the work was done by us; in which case our's would be the only label.

But, again, if it's such that we are doing the bulk of the plaque for corrective purposes, we almost always talk them into a new plaque. Our "out" is generally related to the fact that our plaques, and any work that we do, utilizes laser engraving. Almost always, the plaque being brought to us has been diamond dragged or burnished.

I know others here may disagree, but we operate from the point of view that we primarily utilize our equipment to produce products that we sell, as opposed to fixing products that others sell.

Quite a few folks bring trophies into our store for either repair or additional engraving. This where the Brother P-Touch comes in handy. If the trophy looks great - an older sterling or pewter perpetual cup with some heritage - off comes the previous sticker and on goes ours. If the perpetual trophy looks so-so but needs re-plating/engraving, we fire up the P-Touch and add a sticker that says Trophy Re-Plated & Engraved by Great Atlantic Trophy Company. Junk trophy? We make sure the original sticker is firmly attached and add nothing.

See Stunt's answer first.

The labels are laminated with the printing inside the lamination. They take Windex and never fade. The DPI on the older unit I have is lousy, but you usually cannot notice it unless you try to print a graphic.

It is used for all of my price/description labels in my store.

Does it or can it produce the lables that one would put on the bottom of a trophy or the back of a plaque? ( HEY! That rhymes..I'm a poet and didn't know caust my feet are LONGFELLOWS) { insert corny joke laugh here}

Will it do foil lables?

They have many different tapes available. I generally use gold letters on black. I used to use black letters on clear for the glass because they less obtrusive. They were so unobtrusive that customers were constantly asking how much it cost, into the bucket with that idea.

I have not seen foils as an option. It is too expensive for bottom labels. They are cheap in a few hundred quantities.

Don't even think along those lines Chuck. The Brother unit is great for small runs, but if you are planning on getting labels for your products, there are more cost effective places by far.

I have been known to NOT put my labels on trophies that the customers design, but I don't like (I always try and talk them out of bad designs first). I agree with the others, depends on the amount of work I put into it and if it is quality work.
