We have an EGX-30 on the way. This will be our first experience with mechanical engraving. I was reading about 1, 3, 5 line fonts...All of this is completely different then dealing with the laser...

Anyone know where I can get some free fonts or graphics that are compatible with Dr Engrave or mechanical engraving as a whole? We would like to try it out and see if we are going to be able to do a lot with it before spending hundreds of dollars on clip art/Font CDs...

Hi Mike .... first off your EGX30 utilizes all the fonts that you presently have installed on your computer you can add more to that list from Corel, Adobe, or other programs ... they are True Type fonts. The CD that you will get with your engraver will also come with some additional fonts that work pretty well with your new engraver. Finally, on Roland's support site there is a file you can download that will provide you with about 8 single line fonts and one 3 line Roman font.

John,
Thanks! I'll look at Rolands site. I've read that the true type fonts can be used but something about them not being as effiecent...

What about clip art? Do I basiclly needed to find vector art that is only an outline or can I engrave filled clipart like I do with the laser?

Mike,
Mechanical engraver will require vector files. Not as easy as laser for sure. I have both and the laser is wayyyyy easier.
Good luck!

Larry,
Thanks. I hope we are able to figure it out pretty easy. We will probably just use it for name plates, brass, and Frank's tags...we wanted something to take to swap meets, craft shows, etc. and something we could do the traditional door knockers or other brass items with. We will see how it works out.

Hi Mike .... you will see after you have your machine the pros and cons of using ttf files vs single/multi line fonts. The diversity of ttf files is great but the time to engrave them can be considerable. :-(

Clip art can be directly imported into your roland with dr engrave.

Have a good time with your new engraver!
