fixing up internet photos - Engraving Etc. Forum

Hi Everyone, I recently went and grabbed a photo of some roses for one of my projects off of the internet. The resolution was only 72 so I changed it to 300 but it still looks very pixelated. Do any of you know how I can fix something like that? Barbara Barbara Sample RGile Engravers

Barbara, There a few scaling programs, designed to take low resolution images to larger sizes, with a minimal loss of clarity. One is called Genuine Fractals and another I know of is called S-Spline. Does the "resampling" feature in CorelDraw do the same thing as those programs by increasing the DPI?

The "Bicubic Sharper" resampling in the last few versions of Photoshop comes very close to what Genuine Fractals can do. To the point that a number of people I know who used to use both programs have stopped using G.F.

Most other paint programs don't have that extra level of quality increase in resampling.

And no scaling/resampling is ever going to be as good as finding a higher resolution image to start with.

thanks Dave, I went to the website and tried some of his things, and it did come out better, but I do not think it will engrave nicely. It's just hard to get nice pictures that people want to use from clipart. I wanted something nicer. It is for a wooden chair, and she wants a rose with buds. The best I have found is the three time enlarging process. In your case three time DPI process.

You enlarge it three times at oddball numbers and it smooths out the increase. Resample the 72 DPI to 120, then again resample to 210, then again resample to 300. These numbers are not set in stone, just far enough off an integer number for each increase, be sure to anti-alias each increase.

It will end up a bit blurry, but not pixelated. Use the 'Effects/Sharpen/Unsharp Mask' tool afterward to get a better looking image.

Even though this can do wonders, it will not put in much that is not there.

Barbara,

look in this site http://www.sxc.hu/index.phtml , you need to subscribe to be able to download images, subscription is free and a lot of images are free too (this are a very high resolution images), except some that you need to purchase, but their price are not bad, check it out.
