No. Do it as you are doing it now, but make the hinge in the center. That way it is more accurate and instead of working from one end, you have only one half or the mask to worry about at a time. It tends to help eliminate wrinkles also in the vinyl application. (I do some vinyl, not sandblasting.)

Try one of the firm "felt" squeegees - normally advertised through
sign suppliers as pin-stripe applicator. It is very good at removing
air bubbles and very, very gentle.

I'll see if I can find on. For now I have been using a rubber spatula.... typically used for icing cakes.......
