Vinyl graphics and lasers?

quote: 3M make a range of polyester laser friendly vinyls. We raster and laser cut them extensively for sandblasting and acid etching resists. The colours are limited and prices are high compared to bog standard sign vinyl however.

Do you have a source for this 3M vinyl? I want to do some lettering on my car and truck and since I have the laser do not want to pay someone else locally. I di dsome a couple years ago using the gold foil from Laserbits and it lasted almost 2 years, but if I am going to spend the time I want it to last longer.

On my car I am just doing the business name and phone # but on my truck I want to list my services on the rear window of the cap and the business on the side windows. Another option is to cut my logo in its colors.

Thx,
Jim

I happened to run across this old post of yours and had a *few comments.
I did some contract work in embroidery for a company in Bloomington, IN. that did lots of college work. At this time, the Indiana University Basketball team was in the final four. For them to print shirts on "IU-final four 2001 or whatever they had to pay a royalty to a company that HAD a license with the NCAA. Even though they had a license with IU, the NCAA tournament was a different deal. If they had won, then ownership of the NCA tournament champions went to IU. I believe they paid this company $2.00 per shirt for the ones they PRINTED, not SOLD. These guys were on it, to the point of checking puchase invoices of shirts, all sorts of details. The license with IU came with lots of follow up and checks. You don't play with these guys money, course colleges are about the strongest around. There's a big movement here for them to get Secondary schools who are using college mascots and logos. That's a no-no that many violate. I see all kinds of these American Chopper insignias and I KNOW these guys aren't seeing all of that.

Rodney, thank you for the quick reply! It does make sense that plotter would need vector based graphics, I should have realized that. I see myself forever converting jpgs etc to vector so I will probably get a smaller cutter and a slightly wider injet. Appreciate the nudge in the right direction!

Sorry Dave,

I never saw this post to me for some reason...I decided to do a followup on what we decided to do, and saw your question about if it would be more efficient to get a print/cut machine.

The answer is yes and no...for us it's mainly no. We already have a large format (54") Roland printer that we are doing aqueous pigment printing with. We just bought a 65" laminator to use with this and other things around the shop. Our goal was to be able to print, laminate and cut. Because of the laminating step, it really makes no difference if you have a print and cut machine, or if your printer is seperate from your cutter. The biggest advantage of having seperate units is that you can run both at once. Otherwise one is tied up while you are doing the other.

We chose to purchase the 54" Graphtec plotter that I was asking about, and so far I am very impressed. Within a week I was doing exactly what I wanted to, namely printing, laminating, and then cutting in register. The registration capabilities have been impressive....We needed it to be very accurate for the first job that we tackled, and it was.

I had an opportunity to land a job that would pay for the piece of equipment on the first run....I took it and so far it's been a great machine. Now the trick is to find more jobs like that first one :)

Are you looking at something like this???

www.signwarehouse.com/colorprinters/jx2000.htm

If it is, what you are looking at is a basic waterbase unit and the media that you print will not last as long outdoors as the media printed on the solvent units we were discussing without lamination.

The only reason I am even posting at this point is so that you know what you are getting. Your initial request seemed to have your products headed for outdoor use. Unless the unit you are looking at is solvent based, you will need an overlaminate, and the durability will still be inferior.

We have a Roland FJ500 that is running archival pigment ink and you can only trust it outdoors for around 6 months when applied to the right coated material. There are a few ink jet products that give you a year outdoor life, but that is a far cry from the 3-5 years you will get from a solvent or thermal ribbon printer.

Good luck,

I have the magnetic material in 24" x 50' rolls. So I just need the dimentions, artwork, and colors. The magnetic material is white, and we then apply the vinyl lettering in the colors specified. If you could design the signs in (preferably) corel, or adobe, I can go direct to cutter with the files. Or, let me know what the signs need to have on them, and I would be more than happy to design.

Let me know if I can help.

It certainly helps with ideas, thanks. What I am up against also, that came to light big time, is that the mall must approve all signage even inside the store, as well as displays. Who said that owning your business makes you the boss? Not me!

They will not allow any sign on a white background. So how do you display the colors well? They will not allow too much color because it 'detracts'. They will not allow large signs because it 'shouts'. Yep 1" lettering samples sure works to display outdoor signage, yeah sure.

I'll work it out slowly but these suggestions do give food for thought. Adding on slowly once they get used to what is there sometimes works.

And this mall is a lot more lenient that others.
