I have the Quest 24 X 24 table and like it alot.

As others have said, it is built like a tank and is very reliable.

The biggest minus about the machine is that it is a dos based program.
His new machines my be Windows based, but I am not sure.

I would definitly by another.

Mike .. I think I made a post regarding this very issue within the last month :P ... but anyway, the table for all the Roland engravers is a piece of bent metal which under most conditions, doesn't yield a flat, let alone a square to the rails, table. The ONLY solution to this is buying the 'bed leveling kit' from Roland and leveling it. The kit consists of a bunch of strips of material that you adhere to the existing bed and then chucking up the .128" cutter and utilizing the enclosed software that effectively routes the entire surface bed creating a level bed. Typically you take two passes with it.
Good luck!

ps: You could do the same without buying the kit by buying some coran and installing that yourself and engraving that surface level.

Chuck,
This is so exciting. I agree with Becky. It would be great to see video of your learning experiences. Everybody has been there in one form or another. You could get all kinds of advice and other "newbies" would know they are not alone in their struggles. And, when you are no longer a "newbie" think about what an inspiration you could be.

If you decide to do this please wear your grass skirt.

I have seen PLt files with 5-7 significant figures.

It all depends on the size of the image and the software that is sending it out. Also the setting of plotter units. A small thing with a low plotter unit setting can give really bad results. Making it larger before exporting or upping the plotter units will increase the definition. I generally use the default plotter units of 1016, (I think). [Plotter units are, again I think, the steps per inch.] [Maybe the steps per plotter size, I am a bit confused on this one. I have not fiddled with the hpgl in about 20 years.]

quote: I would like to get as much machine as I can afford, but It still needs to be small enough to be mobile.

Tom,

Ironically, THAT is what my initial intent was. To find something portable that I would be able to take conferences, trade expo's things like that......and I still might.....

But as has been pointed out, you can do anything you need for trophies with your laser, and more and more, the trophy plates are done on a laser anyway.

I personally prefer the look of a metal plate over the plastic alternatives, and you can buy them precut and shaped in various sizes..... and since you can take your laser on the road, well, it sounds like you are set.

Good luck

Lots of conversation about lasering. Has anyone rotary engraved Ikon yet? I have samples in the mail but after reading about the effort and time needed to laser I wonder how it will work on a rotary.

I talked to Bill at Ikon and he said to use a parallel cutter to engrave and an end mill to cut out the finished shape. It seems like I saw someone say he (she?) had used a profile cutter for the engraving. That would give some shoulder to the raised image but seems like it would really add to the time. He also said that they ran the spindle on their Roland at 14,000 rpm but he did not know what feed rate they used. Anybody? He also said they did not use the systems vacuum and that the dust made a little cloud and settled onto the surface.

I can see a lot of uses for this if it does not take forever to mill.
