quote: Dave,

As usual, very good advice.

Of that advice, I personally found this to be the most valuable:

quote:
Instead of thinking about individuals needing gifts and personal items engraved, think about small to large businesses that might need things engraved on an ongoing basis.

Indeed I agree.

I liked your suggestions there.. and appreciate your help. I'm considering a lot of options at the moment, and one of those decisions is regarding 'what products to specialise in'.

Corporate business does seem like a good option:
Awards & recognition, nameplates, engraved pens, business card holders, signs etc.

Like you said, there is potential of a more 'constant' work flow from the corporate business too.

quote: If the case was very flexible, Laserlites or FlexiBrass should be able to roll with the punch.

LaserLights on textured surfaces looks real bad, in my opinion. FlexiBrass probably would have worked. They're now supplying it with 3M adhesive. That probably would have been the best option. I've got an old textured, vinyl briefcase (portfolio book, actually) that I might try that on for display purposes.

It used to bother me when customers would say, "You're the expert. Do whatever you think is best." because not everyone has the same tastes. I'm learning that giving people too many choices is worse than "Doing whatever you think is best".

In a response to a post quite some time ago I shared the fact that we give out wooden gift certificates as donations to charity auctions, raffles, or for door prizes. Here's the LINK to that post.

The wooden gift certificates pay for themselves. It serves as an excellent advertising piece, plus they can be re-used.

There is usually a room full of people at these charity events, so the certificates get plenty of eyeballs. It's advertising worth more than the value of the donation.

It's worked for me. You ought to give it a try.

I spoke to one of our forum members today about being a guest for an upcoming TeleSeminar, on the subject of home-based businesses.

We already have several guest speakers lined up, on various topics.

This person hadn't been to the forum for a while and was unfamiliar with the format. I'm sure there are others in that boat.

In case you're in the group who missed our first TeleSeminar, with Anthony Coyne, (Thursday, April 27th, 2006) here are the two parts:

Mike,
I have only had time to briefly scan the thread so I may repeat something someone has already said.

I'm only about 2 years into this, and I had the very same conversation.....I was frustrated, discouraged, tired and wondering why. BUT I kept going...and all of the best marketing came from WORD OF MOUTH. It takes longer, but it is THE BEST referral system you can get.

Also important in marketing is to get involved. This is tough when you have a full time job as well, ( I am also running my upholstery business to pay the bills while American Pacific Awards continues to grow) but at a minimum join your local chamber, if you military obligations ( thank you for seving by the way) do not preclude you from that. Or better yet join a Rotary Club or other service organization.....not only will you meet new people, make new friends, you will serve your community while all the time BUILDING your business.

Another marketing tool is to follow up IMMEDIATELY when someone enquires about your products/services. I am guilty of NOT doing that and it has cost me some contracts and sales.....so I am getting better at that.

Sometimes it seems there are not enough hours in the day, BUT it all seems to come together at the end of the day.

When I got started, I was impatient, hurried, and being a typical American I WANTED IT NOW!!!! Well, it didn't happen, BUT it IS happening now.....and each day it happens a little faster, and a little faster.....and it will happen for you

Oh, one more thing, right behind word of mouth the yellow page ad I have is my biggest contact generator.

Good luck Mike, you WILL succeed, it will just take some time.
 Sorry for the long post........

Just my two cents. Want change?

The url will be available from your PDU salesperson or from PDU customer service.

By the way we will not be hosting the site. It will be in a very secure site in Texas with back up, 7-24 back up service, and all the necessary security.

Linda

I am presently a member of a BNI group in Canada.
My experience so far has not been very positive. The cost to become a member and stay one is pretty steep. $500 for the annual membership plus $8 for the breakfast at every weekly meeting, for a total of over $900 annually. So far, I have had total referrals of about $600 through the group. I am in my tenth month now. This amount is gross. You can figure how much my net would be, pretty low.
I will not renew as the return on my investment to the group has been pretty dis-propotionate. cindy is correct in saying that the referrals are mostly fom fellow members and are normally for one or badges.

Good Luck

We went out on a limb and ran some radio ads from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. Some spots were 30 seconds, and others were 60 seconds. The spots were placed in/around newscasts, and in Paul Harvey's breaks. We offered a 10% discount for mentioning the ad when placing an order (just as a measurement tool).

We made ONE $25 sale as a result.

HOWEVER...I had many people tell me that they heard our ads, and that they were glad to know about the products and services that we provide. They said that when they needed these things in the future, they'd come to us.

So...I have to avoid the temptation to measure the ads' success by the amount of immediate sales. We've had more NEW customers come in since Christmas than we had last year. Some left money with me, some left with their money. It's likely that at least SOME of these new folks came in as a result of the ads.

We'll probably do the same thing again next year.

Anthony,

What you've shown here goes hand-in-hand with a book that I read called "Return on Customer".

The author points out that most of us have a "new customer acquisition" mindset, but that this is often counter-productive. They go on to demonstrate that, at least in most cases, if we work toward realizing the potential of our existing customers, we'll see much more benefit.

The law of diminishing returns creeps in at some point, because each customer only has so much money. However, we should work toward maximizing the value that each customer brings to our shop.

The book has a lot of insightful points...many of which are over my head. I think I've gotten enough use out of it to cover the purchase price. B-)

Thanks for bringing this up!
