>Have you considered doing a slightly different scale that accounts for the diffraction of the glass...

Yes, that is a possibility and I have done the mathematics to handle the refraction of the beam (somewhat complicated because of the angle if incidence changes with the change in elevation of the sun). There are two reasons the outside engraving is less desirable:

1.) As the angle of incidence gets larger, the amount of reflected beam grows larger to the point where the sun spot image becomes lost in amient light.

2.) Exterior engraving is subject to wear and tear in operating the instrument.

I like pressure pot seperate so when I have a large rock that won't fit the cabinet, I just extend the hose and bring the pot outside.
The other nice thing they carry all the items you need to blast, from the equipment to the graphics and everything in between.

I used Laser Tape from Photobrasive, LaserBits has it too. Lasered it, sandblasted, and paint-filled. Some I only laser, those start at $15 and the sandblast start at $25. Graphics, paint-fill, and hard shapes all add to the price. I don't offer the laser only unless it seems an alternative after quoting the sandblast. I have samples of both methods and they usually sell the better quality of sandblast. Beer bottles I do for fun, and I only laser them for $7.50.

If it is a poly vinyl it is probably PVC based which is a definite no no. The fumes creared will damage the laser.

We use Rayzist's LazerMask. We have a 40 watt laser and use a setting of 60 speed and 100 power which according to Rayzist is overkill but since it works for us that is what we use.

Hope this helps,

Hi Hans
I would recommend calling Ikonics Imaging (Photobrasives) for some samples of their film. I always seem to disagree with Dave lately but I don't think a plotter is the way to go in the business you are trying to get into because I would imagine that the rocks are small and not large boulders. Plotters are just no good with small detail. Although film seems expensive it is really not when all factors are involved. In 100 foot rolls the cost of film is approximately $0.06 per square inch for 5mil self adhesive film. If you do enough volume this can come down to less than $.05 a square inch. On a rock that is going to be something a tourist could carry with them it would probably have an area of less than 4x4 for engraving. That means the film just cost me less than $1.00 for 16 square inches. In that area I can but graphics text small detail anything I want without having to worry about weeding and all of the other things involved it plotters. Time involved for artwork is the same for both ways, washout and developing time for the film is less than 1.5 minutes. That is the same time that it would take just to print on the plotter.
By the way I have a plotter and other than for very large jobs I cannot figure why people doing small work find them better. My guess is that when you first start the cost of film is expensive compared to plotter vinyl and thoughts of large volumes are not considered. Again this is just my $0.02! I have done pebbles through boulders but most of my work is crystal, glass and metal.

I look forward to talking to you, but I really wish we could share our conversation here for all of the other members to learn in the process. I do realize that typing can be a challange for many, and that the traditional phone conversation is more personal and much easier.

I see that your company does quite a bit of sandcarving in wood. You have some intersting pieces. I also see that your company is a new member of the American Arab Chamber of Commerce. These are just a few things I hope to chat with you about. With 35 years under your belt, we may have to cut our conversation into multiple visits.

The leaders of this forum do have a way to organize a Tele-Seminar, where a group of people could have a question and answer session at one time. This techology may help you make better use of your time.

Hi Gayle,
This is another idea. Up until recently I often sandblasted glass. I used cheap sign vinyl. I cut it with my plotter and make my own stencil. Picked out the parts that would be blasted, applied, taped off, blasted and threw in the sink. The mask and tape would just peel off. Very cheap way to do this. Unless she is looking for very detailed images. I used to do beer steins, James line 1 Best man line 2, date line 3. Time consuming but cheap.

They say you can use contact paper too. I am not good enough with a xacto blade for that.

Good Luck.
