I have received 3 more of these calls since I posted the original warning. I have been trying to figure out a way to make sure that I when I refuse the IP call that I am not depriving a truly hearing-impaired person of this valuable service.

Now the first thing I do is ask the operator to ask the caller where this call is originating from. If it's a local person I plan on asking them to come to the store. Not one of these calls is from a local person so once they tell me where they are calling from - the last one was from Detroit and I'm in California - I ask the operator to hang up.

JDS - Help With Scams

I got an e-mail this afternoon from JDS. They discussed the overseas scams we have been seeing where large orders are placed and supposedly paid with a credit card. They included a link with info about scams.

=============================================

Dear Valued JDS Customer:

We've received alerts that suggest that the awards industry is currently being targeted by scammers attempting to purchase large orders of awards.

In one case, an end user is contacting many dealers attempting to order a large quantity of bobble heads and put the order on a credit card. The order is supposedly for a user in Algeria or Ghana and is typically phoned in or e-mailed to the dealer. The credit card number they use in each case is the same although sometimes they claim to be from Florida, other times, Detroit, etc. Recently, four dealers in Baton Rouge received this very suspicious order.

In another case, a member received a very unusual operator assisted phone call as well as a very strange accompanying email from someone claiming to be in Ghana, wanting to order 1200 awards with a credit card.

In yet another case, a member received an urgent email requesting an order for 50 trophies, 36" tall to be shipped overseas. They replied to the email, only to receive a curt reply stating that the ONLY way they could pay for the order was by Charge Card.

If you receive similar correspondence, please proceed with caution. If you believe you are the target of a scam, please contact your local authorities.. Additional information and resources can also be found at the following link:

http://www.ic3.gov/preventiontips.aspx#item-15
Thank you,

JDS Industries, Inc.

Thanks to JDS.

I don't know if his has the potential spam problem or not, but for ones that do, yes a different script is the answer.

The problem comes from generic scripts that pass the recipient email address from the web page. The more secure scripts have the recipient email address hard coded into them in a part of the script that can not be reached from the web. FormMail was a popular CGI script that is supplied by a lot of web hosts as a simple way to have a contact form. Similar scripts in other languages abound and work in similar ways, with similar vulnerabilities.

A custom PHP script with the address hard coded is typically the most secure. The next best thing is this PHP script that a friend of mine wrote, with a bit of advice from me, called "NateMail": http://www.mindpalette.com/formprocessing/index.php

It has a hidden list of recipient email addresses stored on the server and forms can only be sent one of the names you enter in that list. The list can not be accessed or overridden from the web.
