We used to have a guy working for us on straight commission. His main focus was to visit schools and large companies to establish new business.
I think he'd be more of a business development person than a sales rep.
As was stated previously, finding the right person is key. He wasn't the right person, so he no longer works for me. We now have one part-time employee that only works in the shop a couple of days each week. This allows ME to go visit our customers, and to drum up new business.

I have a half time salesman... since we do not have a commercial storefront he sells half time and works in the shop the other half. All awards and small signage, rubber stamps, and so forth.

We have four. There's me...myself...and I. And then, there's Sharon. She consistently out performs the other three. I hate that!! :O)

Actually, we have many friends and acquintances that think we're BOTH nice and BOTH good looking. Just not any in the Illinois/Missouri/Kentucky triangle area.......and possibly IN or ON Maui. ;-)
