And thanks for the suggestion regarding "Plaid", although I've not heard of it here on the West Coast. Ultimately, I gave up on Rub-N-Buff for the particular project I was working on (laser-engraved high density hardboard Home Plate photo plaques for Little League sponsors). I masked the pieces with plain old light tack masking tape, lasered the text and then sprayed the "fill" area with Krylon Ultra Flat black paint.
